Witherspoon-Jackson is a historically Black neighborhood in Princeton with a new historical designation fought for by community leaders and long-term residents Shirley Satterfield and Leighton Newlin. Through discussions with them, and a specific set of exercise: from taking photos of the neighborhood at night, designing an opening installation, physical mock-ups and wall sections allowed us to situate our thinking, build up layers, and ultimately move-in in order to design a satellite museum and community center.

Witherspoon-Jackson Past and Present In our initial observations when studying and documenting the area of Witherspoon-Jackson we were drawn to the life of the porches and the objects that populated this area. We noticed how active porch life was in the community, both during the day and at night, as this space not only offered storage and display but was also a site for neighborly conversation and exchange. Whether the area was fitted with potted plants, election signs, or free books that were left for neighbors to view or take, each porch began to show a peak at the life of the interior.

Stop Motion Yardsale This led to an interest in display and exchange, and helped us plan our institution’s first event, a yard sale held on our community lawn pavement blanket. Neighbors were invited to bring any items they wished to sell and helped unroll the blanket in the morning and then roll it back up in the evening.

Interior Quilts in Motion We imagine a space that can accommodate vast amounts of storage and display through the use of quilted covered shelving walls. The softened walls allow for a playful game of concealing and revealing art, archive, storage, and ite ms from the community as they are all given the opportunity to be put on display and used. The large quilts are pulled up by straps while the smaller quilts use a pin and grommet connection.
